MTRCB Summons ‘It’s Showtime’ Producers Over Controversial ‘Memerimar’ Skit and Colorist Remarks

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has officially summoned the producers of the popular noontime show ‘It’s Showtime’ following a wave of public backlash and complaints regarding its July 24, 2026 episode.

In an official two-page notice to appear signed by MTRCB Chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto, the regulatory body directed representatives from GMA Network Inc. and ABS-CBN Corporation to attend a hearing. The inquiry centers on the show's "Laro Laro Pick" segment, specifically a "Memerimar" skit featuring TV host and comedian Vice Ganda and Ion Perez.

Grounds for the Summons

According to the MTRCB, the agency received numerous complaints from concerned citizens citing alleged inappropriate scenes, colorist remarks, and racially insensitive jokes made during the broadcast. The controversy primarily revolves around Vice Ganda’s alleged remarks and a dramatic "lugaw" scene performed alongside Ion Perez.

The regulatory board noted that these allegations raise serious questions regarding whether the program complied with Section 3(c) of Presidential Decree No. 1986, which prohibits the airing of television programs contrary to law, good customs, public order, public morals, or those that are otherwise objectionable.

Public Apology and Online Reactions

Following the backlash, Vice Ganda issued a public apology before the conclusion of the July 25 episode for the jokes made the previous day.
Despite the apology, the issue has ignited widespread discussions across social media platforms. Netizens and public commentators have drawn comparisons to past controversies involving other noontime programs, fueling intense debates regarding broadcast standards, fairness, and allegations of bias in regulatory actions.

The respondents were ordered to appear before the MTRCB Hearing and Adjudication Committee, with warnings that failure to do so would be treated as a waiver of their right to present evidence.
