MANILA, Philippines — The gritty streets of 1960s Manila have captured the hearts of the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) jury. The period crime thriller "Manila’s Finest" emerged as a massive victor during the Gabi ng Parangal held on December 27, 2025, taking home a staggering total of eight awards, including the prestigious Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award.
A Technical Masterpiece
Directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Raymond Red, the film was widely praised for its immersive world-building. It secured wins in nearly every technical category, proving its excellence in period-accurate storytelling:
- Best Cinematography: Raymond Red
- Best Production Design: Digo Ricio & Big Bulb Productions
- Best Musical Score: Emerzon Texon & Fred Sandoval
- Best Sound: Roy Santos & Neil Diokno
- Best Original Theme Song: "Sandalan" performed by Piolo Pascual
The film also shared the 3rd Best Picture spot and tied for Best Float during the annual Parade of Stars, showcasing its massive appeal to both critics and the general public.
Powerhouse Performances: Piolo Pascual and Enrique Gil
The movie stars Piolo Pascual as Capt. Homer Magtibay and Enrique Gil as 1st Lt. Billy Ojeda. Their portrayal of principled lawmen navigating a system on the brink of historical change resonated deeply with the audience.
"We should stand for truth, justice, and righteousness." — A poignant line from the film that reflects its core message.
Critics have particularly noted the performance of newcomer Ashtine Olviga, who plays Agnes, Magtibay’s daughter. Her emotional scenes provided the film’s "emotional core," earning her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Veteran Cedrick Juan also stood out, earning a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the ensemble.
Beyond Entertainment: A Cultural Warning
Winning the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award cements "Manila’s Finest" as more than just a crime drama. This award is reserved for films that reflect Filipino values and social realities. By revisiting the "First Quarter Storm" era, the film draws haunting parallels between the 1970s and the present day.
Manila's Finest is currently showing in cinemas nationwide as part of the MMFF 2025 lineup. Don't miss this award-winning cinematic experience.
