In a recent heart-to-heart on Toni Talks, the legendary comedic trio JoWaPao—Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, and Paolo Ballesteros—took fans on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. From the accidental birth of their iconic characters to the dangerous yet hilarious stunts on Eat Bulaga’s "Sugod Bahay," the trio proved why they remain the kings of noontime television.
The "Accidental" Birth of Lola Nidora and the Explorer Triplets
One of the biggest revelations during the interview was how the beloved Lola Nidora and her sisters, Tidora and Tinidora, came to be. While fans remember them as the backbone of the "Kalyeserye" phenomenon, their origin was far from planned.
According to Paolo Ballesteros, it all started during the height of the "makeup transformation" trend. Paolo had transformed himself into a character that would eventually become a "Lola." Seeing the potential, he decided to do the same for Jose Manalo.
"Nagka-usohan noon ng makeup transformation. Nag-makeup na ako noon, so pinagaya si Lola Nidora. So, ginawa ko din sa oni tall (Sugod Bahay) so dalawa na kami," Paolo shared.
The comedy escalated when Jose Manalo, in his typical witty fashion, threw an ad-lib that changed everything. During a live segment, Jose suddenly blurted out, "Ah, hindi lang yan, may kapatid pa kaming isa!" referring to Wally Bayola. This spontaneous joke birthed the "de Explorer" triplets, turning a simple makeup experiment into a cultural milestone.
The "Kanal" Incident: A Test of Professionalism and Humor
Toni Gonzaga also asked about their most memorable "Sugod Bahay" experience. Without hesitation, Jose Manalo recalled his infamous fall into a canal.
What looked like a funny blooper on TV was actually a grueling (and smelly) experience for Jose. He recounted how he tried his best not to breathe or open his mouth while submerged to avoid swallowing the "contaminated" water.
The Viral Conversation with "Sir"
The highlight of the story was Jose’s phone call with "Sir" (referring to Eat Bulaga producer Tony Tuviera) immediately after the accident:
* Sir: "Anong nangyari? May mga open wounds ka ba?"
* Jose: (Pointing to his face) "Meron po... ito po 'di ba, 'yung nasa mukha ko?"
* Sir: "Hindi 'yan, puro ka kalokohan! Nag-aalala kami sa'yo... Anong gusto mo?"
* Jose: "Sir, dagdagan niyo po 'yung sahod namin."
The studio erupted in laughter as Jose described the "trauma" of the smell, joking that even in his sleep, he could still scent the canal.
Why JoWaPao Remains Iconic
The interview highlighted the deep chemistry between the three.
Whether it's Paolo’s artistic genius with makeup, Wally’s versatility, or Jose’s quick-fire wit, the JoWaPao trio remains a masterclass in Filipino improvisational comedy. Their ability to turn a literal fall into a "kanal" into a legendary TV moment is exactly why they are well-loved by the Dabarkads.
