As the OPM-focused musical variety show Vibe+ celebrates its first anniversary, veteran director Johnny Manahan—affectionately known as Mr. M—is looking back at the show’s journey with both pride and a realistic outlook.
The program recently held a star-studded celebration at the MVP Studio in Mandaluyong City, featuring performances by Angeline Quinto, Maymay Entrata, and Elha Nympha.
Reflecting on the past year, Mr. M admitted that the experience has been a whirlwind. "Unbelievable, andito pa kami (We are still here)," he shared during an interview. He noted that the program had to start from scratch to build its identity, eventually choosing to anchor itself firmly in OPM (Original Pilipino Music).
When asked about the show’s standing in the competitive ratings game, Mr. M was candid. "I don’t think [we are] competitive yet. But we are getting there. We are close to being competitive, at least somehow," he said with a smile.
Despite the slow climb in ratings, Mr. M finds optimism in how the show has gained traction and recognition among viewers and artists alike. He notes that the feedback has been encouraging, with many viewers pleasantly surprised by the show's quality.
"Nakikilala na kami ng viewers, saka mga artista (Viewers and artists are finally noticing us)," he added. While he acknowledged the inherent pressure of producing a television show, he expressed confidence in his team, noting that they are seasoned industry professionals capable of delivering high-quality content.
As Vibe+ steps into its second year, it is clear that Mr. M and his team are committed to carving out a lasting space for OPM in the Filipino television landscape.
