The Pod Network Drops 'Machong Chismisan' Following Outrage Over Remarks About Josh Aquino

Long-running comedy podcast Machong Chismisan is facing massive public fallout after disparaging remarks made toward Josh Aquino—the eldest son of Queen of All Media Kris Aquino—sparked widespread anger on social media. The controversy led to the immediate removal of the offending episode and the termination of the podcast's contract with media network The Pod Network (TPN).

The Incident Behind the Backlash

The controversy stems from Season 29, Episode 20 titled "S29E20: Ang Pagbabalik ni Kris Aquino," which aired on October 5, 2026. During the episode, host Tito P and co-host RJ Carbonell made disparaging jokes comparing Josh to his younger brother, Bimby Aquino, while making light of his behavior and daily allowance.

Given that Josh is a person on the autism spectrum, the comments were widely condemned as insensitive and cruel by netizens, autism advocacy groups like the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), and prominent personalities including TV host Boy Abunda.

Public Apologies & Explanations

As viral clips of the episode circulated across platforms, the hosts and the network issued separate official statements:

 * Machong Chismisan Statement: Main host Makoy Pare confirmed that the episode was taken down to prevent further harm. He acknowledged that while the show was created in 2014 for lighthearted banter, certain remarks were "inexcusably insensitive and hurtful". Makoy extended apologies to the public, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and the affected parties.

 * Tito P's Apology: Co-host Tito P admitted his comments were disparaging toward Josh Aquino and apologized to the neurodivergent community. Sharing context on his actions, Tito P disclosed his own diagnosis of ADHD, explaining that impulse control issues can make filtering thoughts difficult. However, he emphasized that his condition does not excuse his hurtful words and expressed his intent to apologize to those directly affected in person.

The Pod Network Ends Partnership

Initial response from platform provider The Pod Network (TPN) emphasized that creators speak in their own voices, but acknowledged the platform’s duty to maintain editorial guidelines regarding PWDs, mental health, and family members of public figures.

However, following a full internal review and overwhelming public sentiment, TPN officially released a follow-up statement terminating its contract with Machong Chismisan:

"We have formally terminated our contract with the Machong Chismisan podcast, and are consequently removing the show from the network, effective immediately."

The incident highlights a growing emphasis on accountability, inclusion, and respectful boundary-setting within the digital entertainment and podcasting landscape.

Breaking the Code: Why GMA Left the KBP in 2003—And What Rejoining Would Mean

Introduction: A Historic Breakaway in Philippine Broadcasting

Back in September 2003, the Philippine media landscape experienced a major structural shock. GMA Network Inc. made the bold and definitive decision to withdraw its membership from the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).

This high-profile exit severed a long-standing tie with the country's premiere broadcast media organization. But what drove one of the country's largest networks to walk away, and what would happen if they ever decided to return?

The Catalyst: Why GMA Pulled Out in 2003

The fallout didn't happen overnight. At the heart of the dispute was a fierce clash over industry regulations, specifically commercial loading limits.

 * The Ad Load Debate: Under existing rules set by the Philippine Advertising Board and supported by the KBP, the maximum allowable commercial load per broadcast hour was capped at 18 minutes. This cap was designed to protect viewers from excessive advertising and maintain ad effectiveness.

 * The Appeal and Rejection: GMA sought an appeal to lengthen its allowable commercial load, arguing for more flexibility. When the KBP and industry boards stood firm on the restrictions—coupled with disagreements over disciplinary rulings and suspensions—GMA chose to severe ties completely rather than conform.

By stepping out of the KBP, GMA opted for complete autonomy, answering directly to state regulators like the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) rather than internal media self-regulation codes.

The Stakes: What Consequences Await if GMA Came Back?

While GMA has operated independently of the KBP for decades, media analysts often look at what a potential reinstatement would entail. Rejoining the organization would not just be a matter of signing paperwork; it would carry distinct structural, financial, and operational consequences:

"Returning to the fold means trading absolute programming and commercial independence for collective industry solidarity and peer-regulated accountability."

 * Strict Compliance with Commercial Load Caps:

If GMA re-entered the KBP, it would instantly become bound once again by the organization's stringent Broadcast Code. This would mean strictly adhering to standardized commercial limits per hour, potentially altering ad-sales strategies that have been finely tuned during decades of independent operation.

 * Subjectivity to KBP’s Standards Authority:

The KBP possesses its own Standards Authority that probes, fines, or penalizes member networks for content violations (such as issues concerning fair reporting, watershed programming, or decency). Rejoining would mean placing GMA’s content back under the jurisdiction of a peer-review body, opening them up to KBP-incurred fines rather than purely internal network vetting.

 * Re-aligning with Industry Solidarity:

On the positive side, returning would bring GMA back into a united front for Philippine broadcasting. It would allow them to take part in unified lobbying efforts against legislative threats to media freedom, industry-wide technological shifts, and collective code-of-ethics enforcement. However, it also means compromising on self-determined policies they carved out for themselves back in 2003.

Conclusion

GMA’s 2003 withdrawal from the KBP remains one of the most defining corporate moves in Philippine television history. Whether the network will ever choose to return is a complex balancing act between conforming to collective industry standards and preserving the corporate independence it has fiercely defended for over twenty years.
